Started scouting for a public land place to hunt for opening day of fall bow on September 10th. The Pohat North WMA is rumored to be not such a great place for deer. You can't park on the main road that the Owl's nest is on but there is parking on the street across from the WMA - Mellicks Woods Road. Directly across from that road is an old ATV trail that goes all the way to the top of the mountain. I walked to the top and if the spider webs were any indication no person or deer uses the trail frequently. I saw no deer tracks or rubs or sign of any kind. The entire way the forest was older growth. It was very quiet and serene and I think it may be a good spot during shotgun to hunt as a sanctuary. I have hunted in the past on private property near where the Pohatocong Creek runs into the Delaware and saw a number of good bucks including a 14 pointer during the rut. So, this piece as well as the South Pohat WMA interest me. Check out my pics. At least there is a nice access road to cut into all portions of the North WMA.
