I hiked with my dog Jake and was surprised how damp and nice the mature forest was on the entire loop. I started at the lower portion past the large wood sign and descended along the blur trail to the stream which is cold and clean but devoid of life from what I could see although very pretty. Good for your dog to drink on the lower portion and then again when you cross over on the upper portion. After descending to the orange trail there is a nice parallel and flat section that follows the Musconetcong but far enough so you don't get a good look at it - you just see the cinder road and larger road below. Once you get past the dam, which you can hear and see faintly through the trees you start a very steep ascent (white trail markers) which is moderately difficult. I was so exhausted that I did not keep going to the summit and then just looped back on the yellow trail back to the parking lot. I didn't think that you could see the gorge with the trees this time of year anyway. But all in all the hike is very well maintained with steps at points where it is very steep and stones where it is very wet. Lots of nice mature big trees nice cross of the creek in two spots and lots of moss and ferns. Really surprising nice and I did not see another hiker or car in the lot.
