Marker Description: The trailhead for the hike to the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48, starts in West Portal. It takes two comfortable days up and one down; reservations are needed for the campsites. Breathtaking beauty. Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills are right there where so many movies have been made and both are not to be missed. About 3-4 hours from LA; and a loop back can include Death Valley.

Can be done in one day, but start at midnight, bring water purification, and hiking poles; better to do it slow and camp at the beautiful sites set up. despite the other hikers, it's a wilderness experience. Best time around August 1--the least snow present.
