NJ Raritan River Duke Island Dam
Marker Description: This deep hole below the dam in Duke Island Park in Bridgewater is one of the most productive holes on the river. It is well stocked with trout during the spring, and holdovers run down into the hole from the North and South Branches. Trout approaching 10 lbs. have been taken from this spot. There are also a good number of smallmouths here, with 3 and 4 pounders not uncommon. Due to a constant inflow of oxygen and food, this hole can hold fish year round. In addition to these fish, people can also expect to encounter other standard river fish, such as rock bass, carp, and suckers. There is a dirt parking area at the end of Richardson Lane; you'll see a sign for Sellars Maintenance Facility on Old York Road, take that roadway. Or, if the weather is nice, you can park in the park itself and make the scenic ~1 mile walk to the dam from there.

Another skunked day for my daughter and I. We arrived at the park side of the dam around 9am. We moved across the water to the other side around 11am and then back again around 1pm and stay until about 3pm. I think the best we got was a few nibbles on worm with a bobber. I tried it all; flies, spinners, simmers, corn, marshmallows, worms, etc. Nothing. We saw several other fisherman throughout the day and no one was catching anything... not totally true - one guy next to us did catch two small sunfish.

I still really like this place, but have had no luck over the years. Guess I'm doing it wrong.

End of video, beaut of a brownie caught below the dam. Could be a holdover.

24K trout ... all running up to the Duke Island Dam, it is going to be a crazy spring on the lower Raritan.

Not a bite all day (7-12). Arrived bright and early before sun rise. As I walked up to the dam, I came across a nice 10-12" bow trapped in a pool so I knew there was life. Dropped in at the holes right under the dam on the park side and didn't get a bump. Threw in some lures, some salmon eggs... nothing. Turns out this would set the precedence for the entire morning. Later in the day, further down stream, just after the first rapids on the park side where the water really slows down in the deeper areas I could see schools of suckers ranging from what looked like 16-20" fat fish just sitting near logs and other underwater debris. The water was clear and cool, but I stayed on shore hoping not to disturb the pockets of fat fish. No matter what I threw at them, they just weren't having it. By mid to late morning I had covered the entire stretch from the dam down to the main parking area without so much as a bite.

Having said that, I really like the access here and there are some good pockets, especially at the damn and especially on the side away from the park.

Lots of trout under the dam as always. Smoked my weed up pretty good before I got to the dam and tossed in my minnows. Caught ten trout. Kept one that I hooked deep. One was a monster 24 inch rainbow that looked to be a holdover. Tried to leap up the dam while hooked. Sweet. Hooked the big guy in the lip so he was released with good energy and no weakness to speak of. No photo of the monster so he wouldn't be laid up on the rocks just so I could show you fools and to all you who don't believe it - kiss me balls. Great to be high on the water. Peace out fools, I have the skillz and you'all don't with your gay rapalas and lures and what not.

Reel: Mitchell Avocet S500UL
Line: Stren Microfuse, 4 lb.
Lures: Mepps Aglia, No.2 silver; brown with black flake grub, 1”, on 1/16 oz. unpainted jig head

Found myself in Bridgewater today, so I decided to bring the trout rod and see what was biting. Managed only one hit on the spinner in 2 hours. I fished the hole below Duke Island Park dam. Water is high, but very clear. There is ice on the slow stretches already. I debated whether to put the waders on and try the rapids downstream, but that water was awfully cold. Plus my fingers went numb. I think I'm going to hang it up until we get a warmer day.
