NJ Pohatcong Creek, Brass Castle
Marker Description: Pohatcong Creek at Brass Castle Road has a good native trout population and also a lot of large chubs. There is a dam just up from the Brass Castle Road bridge, where the water runs under the dam on the left hand side when the water is low. There are a lot of nice trout in this home beneath the dam.Good stones and rocky banks, the water looks very good.

Unfortunately, this stretch above Brass Castle Road to the next bridge is not the most wild because it runs past some businesses and behind a lot of houses. There are some nice large trees and a lot of growth along the stream without a path. So it is best to wade.

This is the upper reaches of the Pohatcong and there are a lot of natives even though you are right in town.

Parked in the lot where the marker is placed and there were some fresh signs indicated fall stocking. Fished with nymphs and spinners, no bait, had no luck, so far the fall stockers have all had lockjaw for me.

The water was up but clear, it was evening so I could see very well into the water and didn't see any fish in the water. Only there for a short while, looked good but no luck.

Caught one trout today on a small Panther Martin and a few chubbs. I missed a number of trout and had some follows. Some trout were rising below the dam.

Some of the trout I saw were pretty good meaty fish - 12 inches was the largest but they had that look like they were filled out for the size of the pocket they were in. Good stuff. Must be great fishing on the right day - overcast and a little rain, rather than full sun and eighty degrees in August. Ha, ha.

There were a surprising amount of visible trout for August. I kept one big chubb to use for Striper bait in the Delaware below Easton on the PA side. Check out my Delaware River post if you're interested in stripers.
