NJ Pier Village, Long Branch
Marker Description: Nice looking striper spot with jetties, rock piles and outflow pipes. Parking is available at the shops, but the lot fills up fast. Nice boardwalk along the beach with several access points. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the City of Long Branch requires beachgoers to purchase a pass, which I think I remember being about $35 for the season. Luckily, access during the rest of the year is free. There are also some very nice restaurants at Pier Village, some overlooking the ocean.

Date: November 10, 2010
Time: 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM
Weather: Partly cloudy, 50 F, light wind out of NW
Water: Dirty, visibility fair
Target Species: Striped Bass
Rod: Offshore Angler Gold Cup Inshore GSI71017S
Reel: Penn Captiva CV4000
Line: Power Pro braid, 10 lb.
Lures: 1.5 oz. chrome wobbler spoon

Was able to get in a few casts before work. Hit the beach just as it was getting light. Nailed a 31" keeper at about 6:00. Took the spoon about 30' from me, near a rock pile. Great fight, especially on my little fluke rod! Decided to keep him for the table. That was the only hit I got all morning.

Surf was roaring a bit, but still fishable. Saw a few fish breaking out of casting range. Not much bird activity. A few other anglers on the beach, didn't see them pull anything out, but I wasn't paying much attention to them. Got home, cleaned the fish, and out of its stomach came six 6" mullet, which would explain the pot belly.

Not bad for goofing around a bit before work.

Time: 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM
Weather: Partly cloudy, 40 F, Strong wind out of W
Water: Dirty, visibility less than 1 ft.
Target Species: Striped Bass
Rod: Daiwa D-Wave DWVF802MFS
Reel: Daiwa D-Wave 4000-B
Line: Power Pro Braid, 20 lb.
Lures: 1.5 oz. casting spoon, mullet finish; 1 oz. Kastmaster, silver; 2 oz. Diamond Jig, green tail; Surface popper, yellow

Hit the surf in front of Pier Village before sun-up. No action until it started getting light, missed what felt like a short striper on the casting spoon. A few minutes later I saw fish breaking sporadically all over, but most were out of casting distance. The gulls and diving birds were picking here and there, but they weren't going crazy. On my way back up the beach a fat 24" striper hit the Kastmaster like it insulted his mama; was able to land that one. Surf was very dirty and the fish stopped breaking by about 7:30. Saw two crabs having sex wash up on the beach. Of all the days to not bring my camera!

Two other anglers showed up after it got light, didn't see them land anything. Looked like they were throwing AVAs.
