NJ Pequest River, TCA Upper
Marker Description: Fly and lure fishing only - look for the entrance to the Pequest Trout Hatchery located at 605 Pequest Rd., Oxford, NJ and the large parking area to the left.

The section from the bridge to the outflow is loaded with fish throughout the year including the winter. Below the bridge to the handicap access is excellent as well. Downstream is very good as well and the crowds diminish.

Limited kill stretch from Conrail Railroad Bridge to Pequest Furnace Road Bridge-one trout over 15 inches, except for an 8 week period of 6 kill normal regulations. There was some talk of this TCA going no kill for 2014 but it looks like the Gorge and a section of the Flat Brook won out. The TCA never closes except on Friday stocking days during the 8 week kill all period.

Parked in lot 8:30, one other car in the lot, walked up to the outflow and there were a bunch of big boys in the cement run, not the monsters 25 plus from years past but good size fish, of course they just stocked but hoping it is the run still going despite the trickle, the Pequest is just so low, funny to se the right side spring fed all green and the left side orange and dead, didn't see a fish in the actual river, however made it down below the bridge and caught a real nice rainbow, gave a pretty good fight considering it could barely keep its back under water. Pequest needs rain.

Stopped into the lot to look off the bridge. Fisherman stacked up fishing the cold water from the outflow, hook ups here and there. As I walked up a guy had one on right at the bridge.

We have been on the river several times without fishing together. Let's do that the next time we are tossing flies

Denis those are sick numbers. I fished the lower section near Furnace Road bridge and got skunked on Saturday. Only fished for about 45 minutes but was using a pheasant tail after I talked to you in the lot that day. But it's not just the fly, you gotta have the mad skills. Anyway, awesome. Talk to you soon.

Fished here Thursday afternoon. Caught 14 and lost 5. My last two fish were 23.5" Rainbow andd 21" Rainbow. Both on Pheasant Tail size 18.

Fished today again. Landed 26 and lost 11. 28 of those were between 12:20 and 1:45 when it broke wide open and the recently stocked Brookies were just on the feed. Had a Pheasant tail trailed by a 22 olive midge and they were taking both.

The start of the no kill time at the TCA with massive fish dumped off the bridge has begun. There were three young kids with spinning rods who said they had a field day - one kid caught fifty trout and two over twenty inches. I forgot my waders at home and managed to catch two - one 19 inch brown on an olive colored midge size 16 and one small rainbow on a 22 red midge. There were large breeders rolling under the bridge but I couldn't get them to bite, had one on but missed it. Good times at the TCA, get 'em before the takers come.

Ha, ha. Denis, good stuff on the comment. It was good to meet up with you on the river today. Was cool to see you hook into that monster. When you pulled that stick out of the water and there were those huge green inch worm looking nymphs I thought we would start nailing them. It didn't happen right away but I used the green nymph you gave me and hooked into and missed quite a few up toward the bridge.

My Dad found a good hole just above the bridge - not like anything hasn't been found there - but he caught twenty and I saw him with a fish that ran down under the bridge with some sweet leaps.

I had luck on the light green nymph and also a puppa looking olive size 14 with gold ribbing. Caught one bow and a brookie both about 15; missed many hooked and lost 4 - no real monsters. My Dad caught two over twenty. A lot of guys were catching real nice fish mostly on small 20 to 24 midges.

If there is a better trout fishing place in New Jersey for quantity of big fish I'd love to know. Hopefully we will get some rain before opening day to protect the fish from the potential spin fish slaughter. Anyway, great to see you Denis and learn a bit from your mad skills. Talk to you soon.

Nice Bow in the net there Randy! Try using that fly rod instead of netting them coming out of the chute! Its much more fun! Just kidding! :-) Nice fish!

Size 18 zebra midge -black. One small rainbow in the rain. Fished 5 til dark. Wading shoes left in parking lot, there when I got there, there when I left - not like anyone would really want to steal someone's rank boots anyway.
