NJ Pequest River, Island Park
Marker Description: This location of the Pequest River is heavily stocked at the bar on Route 46. There used to be an origianl photograph of Babe Ruth fishing in the Pequest just above the bar but the prior owner took it with him. Anyway, this is a hotspot on opening day and on Friday stockings - fishing starts at 5:00 p.m.

No fish stocked on opening day of 2012. Parking lot was blocked off. The good ole Island Park is very dead. In years past it was almost. Island Park and Luigi's Rancho are the remnants of Babe Ruth's time when western NJ was the fishing destination you could reach in four hours from the NYC. Now you can reach New England in that time. The water is still great - the Pequest is a gem.

Stopped in yesterday while on my way to Hackettstown and through a few Trout Magnet Rapala type lures in rainbow color. These have been deadly for me. I had two good flashes but nothing stuck. The old bar is in terrible disrepair and it has an auction sign with first bid at $50k w/ the liquor license. What a world. The little walking bridge is jammed with logs and needs to be cleared before the whole thing is ripped off its foundation. I got the feeling that a little running and gunning in that area - either up or down - could lead to some good numbers of fish. I din't have waders so I couldn't get angles and fish properly, anyway, good to know there are a few fish within easy access right there. No time, gitta have time to fish.

I fished the Pequest River yesterday and took just a few casts on my way through with spinners. The water was high and visibility was low. I did see a trout continually rise for flies on the bank near the bar. I didn't have fly tackle.
