NJ Pequest River, TCA Outflow
Marker Description: Pequest Trout Hatchery, 605 Pequest Rd., Oxford, NJ 07863. The outflow of the hatchery near the upstream start of one the Trout Conservation Areas on the Pequest, where only one fish over 15 inches can be kept. Most fly fishermen practice catch and release in this area and this helps keep a strong population of small and big trout. All TCAs are never closed to fishing. This location is excellent leading up to opening day during the time period from mid March through opening day in April, when all non TCA trout waters are closed in NJ. During the closed time period the TCA is a no kill. In the spring after opening day, the TCA gets hit pretty hard because six fish limit exists for a while. It would be great if that would change, but.. the stretch recovers well into summer. In the fall, the outflow water from the hatchery draws spawning rainbows drawn back to the water they were raised in. In the winter, the warmer water from the outflow draws trout. The Pequest TCA near the outflow is considered by many to be the best winter trout fishery in the State. There are big trout in excess here - fish over twenty inches can be seen caught daily and released ... most of the time.

Stopped by today. Water lever was low, but there were a lot of fish. Several 24"+ cruising around. Many 18"+ stacked up.

One guy was pulling in a fish every 5th cast or so. He was using large hooks tied in a nymph pattern. He said it was all about the splash, but I wonder if he was snagging them. He caught a good 20 fish in the couple of hours he was there. He kept the two large 4lb'ers he caught - one of which I did see the fish hooked in the bottom jaw.

Anyway, I did catch a few.

October 28 trout in the run, nothing at the outflow, less than 4 inches a water, tie your fly to your strike indicator... terrible

Stopped in to check the outflow chute. Saw not one trout. By this time the chute is normally packed. Hope it is just a delay b/c of the low flows, time will tell.

Water was very low and clear despite the drizzle. Kicked up a heard of deer walking up the outflow. Caught one mid sized rainbow on an orange egg with yellow dot. Saw a bunch of nice sized rainbows dead in the water.

Not a lot of water following. There were a few rainbows here and there from 16 to 22. Caught two nice bows on a clown egg pattern. Fish fought pretty well but nowhere for them to go with the skinny water. Fish were dark - looked like spawned out chrome.
