NJ Pophandusing Creek, Belvidere
Marker Description: The Pophandusing Creek is a very small creek. The NJDF&G published that it stocks 210 trout in the stream. The stream in this area is very close to where it ends in the Delaware, there are some nice cuts along the bridges and pools well in areas.

Holdovers and natives exist.

The cement wall in all the pics is obviously the spot. Practice catch and release on this gem.

Caught one small native brownie on a brown trout magnet. Water was low, no stockers in sight.

My Dad caught ten trout mostly on a panther martin and some on worms. at the tail end of the run along the cement wall he caught about six in six casts. Some were holdover brook trout and rainbows with beautiful colors. I caught four on a yellow trout magnet. Despite the heavy rain the water was low and clear. This spot is such a winner.

Went to the Pophandusing today and the water level was very low. I caught one three inch small mouth bass and a few minnows. At the marker placement, just behind the one house I saw four or five decent sized trout. They spooked after my first cast.

I also walked upstream and the one good hole past the trick bike spot was washed out and I saw nothing. Also downstream under the 519 bridge the hole was cleaned out. I was surprised that there weren't any fish in the hole because there are normally always a few fish in that hole.

My Dad hit up the spot in hopes of hooking the lunker, I went along to take photographs. He caught five trout, four rainbows and one brookie. The water was a little murky and high from the rain and it was late in the day and overcast. So it couldn't have been better conditions.

Five trout from one hole, not bad. But the lunker never showed. The hunt continues.

Fished last night with worms and had no luck, very surprising. This morning I had to be up in Belvidere for work and I took a few casts again along the cement wall ledge just past the bridge behind the house where the lunker lives. First cast a number of good sized trout followed. Second cast a caught a nice native/holdover rainbow maybe 12 inches. Repeat casts yielded nothing. I may never see the lunker again - see prior post - but I know it is there - it has nowhere to go. Stay posted even though no one goes on this site - I guess it will be my private diary. Ha, ha. If you read this and catch it - let me know - catch and release yo!

Decided to head back to the Pophandusing, the first time since opening day. I caught three rainbow trout, one holdover or native. I fished again along the cement wall behind the houses just down from the marker placement. My first cast with a small yellow bodied red spotted panther martin got a follow from a huge trout - could have been twenty inches - it was huge but my cast wasn't close enough to the wall ledge and the lunker came out and followed for a good way and then went back under the ledge not to be seen again. This was the same hole I caught the hold over on opening day. I was shocked at the size of the fish. I will go back and catch and put up a pic on the site.

Then I walked upstream past the bike play spot and behind a bunch more homes. The one pool with the pic I hit the three rainbows. The native/holdover jumped twice and fought great. All fish released the last shot of the native doesn't do it justice.

Fished today on opening day because the Pequest was so muddy, I fished at three locations near Paphandusing State stocking signs - I saw no people and no nets of trout. Odd. However, I walked downstream under the bridge behind a house and saw a number of small trout follow my lure. I caught a real nice rainbow that was definitely a hold over. See pic. 2010 DLN 35 trout
