NJ Toms River TCA
Marker Description: For South Jersey trout streams, Toms River may be the best; it has a good population of holdovers and is spring fed so it has relatively constant cool temps in the summer. Toms has a sand bottom and stained southern water, which is pretty cool water to fish. It's also a tough stream to fish, because of tightness of casting and holes that are hard to get at - but once you figure out its secrets, it's still difficult fishing but rewarding.

You can access the Toms River TCA from the lower end on Rte 571 and from Riverwood Park off Rte 527 on the upper end. From the Park walk down to the river and then follow it downstream about 1/4 mile. If you walk upstream from Rte 571, walk on the right hand side of the river. The TCA is approximately one mile in length.

The trout in the TCA are mainly stockies and hold overs, no evidence of reproduction.

Toms TCA has temps over 75 degrees, too hot to fish, another site talked about the idea that the TCA stays safe all year but apparently not after a guy went and tested. Spring fed but not solely spring fed.

had to head south for work and I stopped in for the first time at the Toms. I love the stained look of this stream. Only caught one small brown on an olive mini trout magnet with a silver head - but could only stay for a half an hour. Will definitely be back.

Egg patterns (especially orange & pink), green weenies, big stonefly patterns and dead drifting black buggers all work well right now. Just bring a lot of flies and tippet, losing equipment to snags is the name of the game there... If you're not snagging, then you're probably not catching either!

The TCA part of River is a little high...but fish are there! Fishing egg patterns are working deep!
