NJ S Branch Raritan, Flanders-Drakestown Rd
Marker Description: The SBR at the Drakestown-Flanders Road Bridge is a trout stocking location. There is a large crushed stone pull-off to park right next to the bridge. The pool right below the bridge is a long deep one. Above the bridge is a dam. I had heard that the stocked fish are unable to swim over the dam but the drop is only a few feet so they easily can swim over it. I took a few casts and had no luck but will be back to explore either above or below. Below the bridge Turkey Brook joins the SBR, would be good spot to check out.

So I was out this Saturday morning and it was very slow. Picked up a small brownie, then on the way home, stopped at a favorite hole along Bartley Rd. for a few casts. On the "one last cast" of the morning I hooked and netted a really nice thick holdover rainbow. I reached for my camera but realized I had left my vest in the truck just a few yards away. I folded the fish up in my net, laid it on the grass and ran to get the camera (I was keeping the fish)... I am gone 10 seconds and when I get back, the fish has flopped out of the net and back to the edge of the water, ready to make a getaway. I completely lost my mind going it trout-zone, and as he flopped into the water, I DOVE for him, in my nice wader and camera in hand. Like a I say... trout-zone, completely blacked out. I grabbed him, lost him, grabbed him, and lost him. Fish gone.. camera soaked and good as gone.. and waders filled up. It took awhile but I finally had a laugh about it.
On a plus note, I caught #200 for the year this morning, and my first EVER on a fly rod. I have been converted.

Things are starting to slow down now for the summer. I went out yesterday morning and only picked up 5 (3 browns, a holdover bow, and surprisingly a stocker bow), which in the same stretch last Saturday AM I caught 16 wild ones. The water is way lower too in just a week... we need rain badly.

Congrats! 100 early, could be a 200 plus year for you, I'm sitting down at less than 20, hit the one spot you told me about and I caught three on dries but it was high noon on a sunny day. I saw a whole lotta little wild browns, really an amazing stretch, thanks for sharing it with me.

Yeah, it's been a really good year so far! She's definitely a holdover, probably from the fall. Just a few hundred yards downstream from the marker. Roostertail did the trick.

Nice fish! Big fins too, maybe a hold over. You've been catching some nice fish. What did you get that one on?
