Made a few casts yesterday while walking the dog and caught the first wild brownie of the year. Glad to see that some survived the brutal end of summer last year. Where there is one, there is more :)

DBrown:

Sad to think that someone ate a bunch of wild browns but... I'm sure they didn't get them all!

I went for a dog-walk down to Buttermilk Falls on Saturday probably since early July just to check out the flow and water levels. The water was crystal clear and low but moving and chilly, and I was very pleasantly surprised to see 10-15 browns up to at least 10" cruising in the pool below the falls. The water was so clear I could see bottom detail clearly even in the deepest part of the hole.
So I stopped in last night on the way home from work figuring some ant patterns would work. There was not a single fish to be found. Two days later, not one single fish! The bizarre thing is that the tail of the pool is dammed up with limb debris that hasn't been able to flow on out, and their is no way those trout jump up the falls (as hard as they may try). Two days! It is very disconcerting. There are soccer fields right there at the park entrance and I have seen little kids there with their parents bait fishing... it makes me worry that some worm-dunker went in there on Sunday and cleaned them out.

Anyone that is familiar with the Buttermilk Falls stretch... I saw the craziest thing I have ever seen here, trout related. BM Falls is maybe 8-10' elevation drop in the stream flow, pretty little double tier waterfall. Yesterday I was working Trout Magnets in the big pool below the falls when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye... then I see 5"-10" trout trying to LEAP up the falls like miniature salmon! I left my camera in the truck or I would have taken video. I think maybe they had been washed downstream by the swollen current from the recent rains, and were trying to get back "home".

maybe 20 casts while walking the dog netted two wild brownies... I need to give it some serious attention after the recent rains.
