NJ Mulhockaway Creek, Rte 635
Marker Description: The stretch of Mulhockaway Creek from the Rt. 635 Bridge downstream to where it flows into Spruce Run Reservoir offers some surprisingly productive trout fishing. In the spring the creek is stocked with trout at the bridge, and the trout quickly spread out into the isolated pools along the creek. Most anglers don't venture more than a few hundred yards upstream or downstream of the bridge, meaning the water closer to the reservoir is largely unfished. Aside from the stocked trout, the creek supports a population of smaller wild trout. These trout are active during the cooler temperatures of the spring and fall, and hold tight to cover or seek deeper water in the summer months. In the fall, brown trout run up from the reservoir to spawn. Most are 12 to 15 inches, with some larger fish in the 3 to 5 pound range. Stocked trout are susceptible to a variety of lures, while the larger native trout are best pursued with live bait or flies. This stream is usually one of the first to clear up after heavy rains. In seasons of low rainfall, the water levels can make for low, ultra-clear conditions and spooky fish.

The water is very low, clear, but low, maybe 6" - 8" deep. Signs says its stocked, but its only a short time after stocking, and there's nothing. I went all the way down the foot path from the bridge toward Spruce run, stopped just before the two creeks come together. If you're going to give it a shot, park north of the bridge.

Caught a 19 inch hook jawed brown trout yesterday in the deep pool where the Mulhockaway joins Spruce Run. There is a channel about twenty feet deep where I caught the fish which is really more reservoir than creek and I saw a few other large browns in the channel.

Caught the trout on a size 20 black beauty dropped off a wooly bugger. Fish gave a great fight, no leaps but some nice swirling and thrashing.

Landed a few little ones on the way down.

Fished under the bridge and didn't walk up or down stream, lazy few casts with a small light green bead head, water looked good, didn't see anything. Nothing doing but I was just taking a few casts before going out hunting.

Mulhockaway Creek is stocked with trout in the spring. Browns run up from Spruce Run Reservoir in the fall.
