NJ Mulhockaway Creek, Rte 78
Marker Description: The Mulhockaway Creek is a trout stocked small trout stream. There are also a lot of native brown trout. Brown trout run up from Spruce Run Reservoir in the fall but most small native browns live year round.

This stream is very small and cold and summer fishing is still good.

Fished today on a stocking day - caught one lackluster rainbow that turned on its side and didn't fight at all - saw another two trout when trudging back to the car in the water. The water was up and very clear - nice conditions but there were many people about - I think it was stocked early and hit hard.

It poured for about 15 minutes late in the afternoon and I tried to head over to the Lopatcong Creek to go for some browns but the Lopat was chocolate milk. So I headed over to the Mulhockaway and it was low and clear. I don't know if it didn't rain over Jugtown Mountain or what but I was hoping for some extra water. Anyway, I caught four trout - two small native browns and two about 10 inch stockie rainbows.

I walked from 78 upstream to the next bridge. I saw a lot of little natives but many just were not interested in my spinner. Panther Martin rainbow pattern real small job.

Also, these trout could see me walking upstream even though I had some tan shirt and greenish shorts. You really only get that first cast where they come out and either strike or look around to see you standing there. I tried to cast from a good distance away but still I feel like they are following the lure and looking for the fisherman or the great blue heron standing streamside.

The second stockie rainbow just came out from the under hang of a bank and hit my lure a ton, jumped and really seemed a hell of a lot bigger when he first struck. Nice fish.

Fished this afternoon and saw about twenty or so native browns skiddering about as I waded the stream. Caught a nice six inch native brown on a brown bead head; missed another larger trout.

Saw a few that were bigger, maybe stockies.

Fished under the bridges for only a few minutes. Lots o trout.
