Lake Toho is one of the most well-known big largemouth b*** factories in Florida. The year-round warm temperatures and abundant forage means b*** grow big fast. The most popular technique is fishing a large golden shiner on heavy braided line beneath a float over weedy flats. The shiners can be expensive (around $18 a dozen), but they're worth every penny when the bite is on. Fishing with lures can be productive at times, but not nearly as consistent as with shiners. Anglers can also expect to hook a fair number of bowfin and longnose gar, which also inhabit the lake. Numerous wading birds and alligators can be seen along the weed-choked shallows at the lake's shore. The lake is a short drive from Orlando, which offers excellent hotel and dining options. Several guides operate out of the local marinas. Bring lots of sunscreen and lots of water, as the midday sun and humidity can be absolutely brutal.
