Well just hit the lake for the first time this spring, and I have to admit I am completely loosing faith in man kind. I got 3 plastic bags, on back to back to back casts. Then I noticed people rinsing brand new cook ware in the lake. Which left a awful oil slick. I just reported it to DEP. I want to organize a lake clean up day, it's in terrible condition.

AdamsEye - yeah that bass is more than solid. I tried to check to see if boats are legal and I couldn't find a definitive answer. However, I saw mention of boat rentals from J&D something and a bunch of people who have launched their own boats. Also in the description LardAlmighty, who is my cousin, said non-motorized boats are allowed and he wouldn't have put that if he didn't somehow know what is up. Anyway, good stuff. Later.

I have fished this lake a few times as a kid, and remember landing a few nice solid 3lb lm bass off south lake dr. closer to the highway. So me and a buddy figured we would try it out tonight, worked well he came a way with a solid 3lb bass off a chug bug. I was tossing a bluegill colored jig, 10" camo power worm, and a black blue flake buzz bait but no takers. Even tried a devils horse, nothing. I have however done well with floating worms and crank baits.

Anyone know if you can still put a boat in there? I read online yes and no, but I seen a pontoon boat and two paddle boats by the stage. I would like to fish it from my canoe.

Weather: Mostly sunny, 70 F, strong winds out of W
Water: Slightly stained, visibility good
Target Species: Largemouth Bass, Pickerel
Rod: Berkley Lightning Rod LRS662ML
Reel: Shimano Sidestab 2500RE
Line: Stren Clear Blue, 8 lb.
Lures: Rebel Humpback crankbait, rainbow trout color; 1/8 oz. buzzbait, white and chartreuse

Since I have apparently mastered trout fishing decided to go for bass at Lake Carasaljo. I landed two pickerel and two nice bass quickly, but then the wind really started cranking and the bite shut down. The lower end of the lake had whitecaps. Moved to the upper end of the lake. The crankbait was bringing in weeds on every cast, so I had to switch to the buzzer. No takers on that. Decided to head home before the wind blew me into the lake.

Date: Saturday, April 3, 2010
Time: 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Weather: Sunny, 65 F, moderate wind out of E
Water: Stained, visibility good
Target Species: Largemouth Bass, Pickerel
Rod: Berkley Lightning Rod LRS662ML
Reel: Shimano Sidestab 2500RE
Line: Stren Clear Blue, 8 lb.
Lures: 3" Slug-go, shad color, Texas-rigged on size 2 worm hook.

Hit the cove by the highway first and immediately started tagging bass to 12" and pickerel to 15". Non-stop action for the first hour, then it died. Moved to the upper part of the lake and ran into a school of perch, caught several of those 6-8 inches and a small pickerel. Final tally: 8 perch, 7 pickerel, and 4 bass. No lunkers, but my best day on that lake numbers-wise.

Lots of people out fishing today, most with bait and bobbers. Saw a few sunnies, bass and perch caught, but nothing big.

Time: 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Weather: Sunny, 70 F, moderate wind out of NE
Water: Stained, visibility good
Target Species: Largemouth Bass, Pickerel
Rod: Berkley Lightning Rod LRS662ML
Reel: Shimano Sidestab 2500RE
Line: Stren Clear Blue, 8 lb.
Lures: Mepps Aglia spinner, #1 gold; Fin-S Fish, 3", shad color, fished on size 2 wide-gap hook; Rapala SSR05 Shallow Shad Rap, shad color

Started out at the shallow cove along the highway, and immediately got 2 pickerel on the shad rap. Fished around the dam for a little while without a bite, then tried the cove again and got two small largemouths, one on the Fin-S and one on the Mepps. Headed to the western end of the lake and missed a couple of nice pickerel. Worked around the south end of the lake and caught 4 more pickerel, all on the shad rap, the largest being 18 inches.

Lots of people out today. Talked with a local angler who has been fishing the lake for over 15 years, and we traded notes (although most of the notes were his). He was nailing pickerel on a white rooster tail. Lots of baitfish activity when the sun got low. Fish were pretty clustered; when I hooked a fish I usually hooked at least one more in the same spot. All the fish were in skinny water, ~2 feet or less.

Weather: Sunny, 75 F, slight wind out of NW
Water: Slightly stained; visibility good
Target Species: Largemouth Bass, Pickerel
Rod: Shakespeare Intrepid SP-848-1UUL / Quantum Dance Class BDC60M
Reel: Mitchell Avocet S500UL / Zebco Rhino RBC300
Line: Stren Microfuse, 4 lb. / Spiderwire Stealth, 30 lb.
Lures: Mepps Aglia, No.2 silver; Rebel Pop-R, silver/black back; Buzzbait, white, 3/8 oz.

Wanted to tune up the ultralight once before taking it out for trout next week, so I headed down to Carasaljo for some pickerel. Fished with the Mepps in the shallow cove near Route 9, and caught three largemouths up to 1 lb. The pickerel seemed to be nosing the bait, so I switched to the much slower Pop-R. Got lots of small swirls and pickerel streaking in from all over to take a look, but no hook-ups. Tossed the Mepps in the main lake for a few casts, and landed what had to have been the smallest perch I had ever caught. No more action on the ultralight.

Moved up the lake and broke out the baitcaster with the buzzbait. Fished along the southwest shore of the lake. Raise a fish immediately, but nothing after that. The upper part of the lake looks AMAZING; pads, coontail, and wood cover everywhere. And yet, not a single strike. To say I was surprised and disappointed would be an understatement. Once again no one else fishing the lake. There was a big hatch going on (looked like midges), and there was lots of bait at the surface feeding on them. Didn't see any big swirls underneath the pods of bait, though.

We'll see if the trout are more cooperative than the bass next week.
