NJ SBR Ken Lockwood Gorge, Upper
Marker Description: The Ken Lockwood Upper Gate parking area allows you to drive in almost to the deep pool with the Ken Lockwood bronze plate on the boulder. The Upper stretch is considered the most beautiful portion of the gorge. Raritan River Road is normally blocked off to allow hiker and the like a car free road to walk along.

The area near the parking lot at the upper gate has some huge boulders and great deep pools. This area is a catch and release only beginning January 1, 2014.

The gorge is very pretty and there is great water but the tranquility is not as great as you would hope because it is so crowded with hikers and fly fishermen. Heavily stocked and many hold overs.

Fished this same spot just below the bridge yesterday. With a pair of polarizing glasses you could clearly see at least a dozen or more stockers sitting in the valley of the hole right next to the monster in the photo above. Throughout the day various anglers passed through and would throw everything they had at him. No luck yesterday. The entire school just seemed to laugh at us all.

Great little hole, but fish just weren't that active. Every once in a while there was some movement and one would break the surface, but nothing was touching egg-pattern, BWO's or emergers for me.

I believe this was caught on a kastmaster spoon, but I know he got others on a floating Rapala. I think it was silver with green on the top.

I fished the upper section of the Gorge from 7:30am-1:00pm. The water was very low and very clear, but with the stocking that just happened, there were tons of fish in all the deep holes. I landed a 12" brown and 5 rainbows. I hooked a few more, but they got off or broke the line. My buddy caught one of the 20+" rainbows that was stocked.Pictures will follow.

Parked in the upper lot and saw that the river was brown put clear enough toward the edges. I fished the holes near the lot with no luck and then decided to walk a ways down. After the rock portion of the road where there is a slow bend pool I saw a guy camped out. No fish. I headed down to the next turn around and fished that nice boulder section and caught one small brookie on a green gold bead head size 14. I had to meet my fiance's family so I had to turn around.

Threw my kid on my back and tied on a sulphur nymph pattern and a Blue Winged Olive ice emerger and picked up small rainbows and browns all over. See flies in attached pic.

Fished the afternoon in the rain today. Figured I'd hit the gorge when nobody would be there. My friend and I had a great time. I landed 11 and lost 7 on various flies. Water was real low, but there are fish everywhere.

Stopped for a brief hour at the upper end of the gorge tonight. Lost 2 and landed this 18" rainbow.

Some portion of the road along the river have been washed away. The water was murky but the fish were hitting flourescent orange no. 1 mepps, brownies 8 to 12 inches were aggressive.
