Location: Island Beach State Park, NJ
Date: Saturday, October 31, 2009
Time: 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Weather: Mostly cloudy, 70F, heavy wind out of S
Water: Murky, visibility fair
Target Species: Striped Bass
Rod: Offshore Angler Gold Cup Inshore GSI71017S
Reel: Penn Captiva CV4000
Line: Power Pro braid, 20 lb.
Lures: 1.5 oz. wobbler spoon, silver; 1.5 oz. casting spoon, mullet finish

Heard that the striper run was in, so I decided to cash in. Parked at the bathing beach and worked my way north. Got a sundial on the wobbler, then promptly lost it a few casts later when the snap swivel popped open. Tied on the mullet spoon, and on my first cast ever with it, I hung something big. After a few minutes I finally beached my FIRST EVER STRIPER FROM THE SURF! I checked the length on the marker I have on my rod, which is exactly 28” from marker to rod butt. By my reckoning, the fish was about 27 and 7/8.” So she went back in to fight another day. Worked up to Gillikin’s and back again, but no other hits.

Saw plenty of other hookups during the day; maybe about 10, and those were just the people around me. Nothing big, though; did not hear of any keeper stripers landed, and the few blues were only running about 4-5 pounds. The south wind was a pain, and only bait or metal could get any kind of casting distance. But the run is in. And, if a rookie like me can catch a striper, anyone can. Get out there!
