Marker Description: Located in the Cape Fear River estuary, the jetty is one of the last places accessible to non-boaters before the river empties into the Atlantic. It's a short walk from the parking lot at the end of Route 421 to the jetty. Very rocky around the jetty, so expect to lose some hooks or lures. Fishing the bottom with bait and sinkers is the most popular tactic, but lures can be used as well. Typically, anglers will encounter sea trout, redfish, small sharks, and even small grouper. Pay attention to the tides, as the jetty becomes almost submerged and very treacherous during high tide. The protected waters away from the channel also offer a good place for kayaking and wind boarding. The mud flats near the jetty have a preponderance of small fiddler crabs.

I hit this place several times while I was down at college. Can't say I really knew what I was doing, but the fishing was always slow. Catching one fish was a big deal. Never saw anyone else have great luck, either.
