MD Elk Neck State Park
Marker Description: Elk Neck State Park offers year round camping on select campsite loupes. Set in a wooded landscape, the facilities are adequate, campsites were clean and well spaced. In addition to the private camping beach area and the larger public beach the campsite had several different play areas, groomed open grassy fields, paved and non paved trails offered something for all ages. A general store had everything needed for extended stays, including a full menu snack bar in case you get bored with camp food.

We did a multi-family trip back in July of 2011. It just so happened to be the hottest week of the year with day one hitting nearly 110*F on our way down to the park. It wasn't until day 3 or 4 that we saw temps in the low 90's. Although the facility was nice, the water in the bay was... interesting for a lack of a better word. Reports noted that the water was borderline safe to swim in because the bacteria levels were so high. With it being 105*F, humid and sunny, we took our chances and spent the majority of our day in the water. It may have shaved off a few years of our lives, but it was worth it. Not only did the water save us from the heat, it kept the bitting black flies off the parts of our bodies submerged in the water - ugh - they were terrible.

It was a tough trip to say the least so it's hard to give a real unbiased rating for the campsite. I'll stick with a 3-star, but take that with a grain of salt. The highlight of our trip were the two or three, 6-8" long Hickory Horned Devil caterpillars we came across. None of us had ever seen anything like it.
